About Tiwil Bonsai

What can you gain out of the process of Bonsai making?

About us

When I was younger, I often admired beautiful bonsai trees in shops and exhibitions.

They looked like ancient spirits, standing strong but small, carrying the weight of many decades. I wished to have one, but I knew my reality. A good bonsai costs a lot, and I have only a simple budget. Time also runs fast. To grow a large, powerful tree from seedling can take many, many years. I thought, maybe I do not have enough years left to see them at their best.

Still, I decided not to give up. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, I chose to start with what I can. I bought small seedlings, young and fragile. They are nothing special now—just little plants in small pots. But when I look at them, I see the future. I see a tree that one day may carry grace, patience, and wisdom.

I give each tree a number and record its history. Tree No.1, Tree No.2, Tree No.3… Each one is unique. Some grow straight, some bend, some struggle, some surprise me. They are like people, each with their own character. When I wire their branches, I am not forcing them, I am guiding them—slowly, gently, with respect.

I remind myself that bonsai is not about rushing. It is a long journey, sometimes longer than a lifetime. Maybe I will not see the final beauty of these trees, but that does not make me sad. Because every day I spend watering them, trimming them, or simply watching them in silence, I feel peace inside.

This website is my record, a diary of small trees and small moments. One day, when my hands are too old to hold the wire, I hope my three sons will continue. They will see how their father’s care and patience are living inside these trees. Perhaps they will learn that real beauty is not bought with money, but grown slowly, with love and time.

Bonsai teaches me this truth: life is short, but if we plant something today, our children can enjoy it tomorrow. In this way, my bonsai trees are not only mine. They are my gift, my story, my hope passed on.

To Adam, Marcus & Tony

Dear Sons,

When you see me sitting quietly with my small plants, maybe you wonder why I spend so much time with them. They are not big trees, not famous, not expensive. Just little bonsai seedlings in simple pots. But for me, they carry a dream.

I once saw beautiful bonsai in a shop—majestic, shaped by decades of patience. I wished I could own one. But life is not always what we wish. Time is moving, money is limited. So I started with what I could afford—tiny seedlings, ordinary to most people, but treasures to me.

Each tree I give a number, and I write down its story. Tree No.1, Tree No.2, Tree No.3… Like you three boys, each one is different. Some grow strong, some bend, some fight against the wind. I wire their branches gently, not to control them, but to guide them—like how I try to guide you in life.

I will not live long enough to see these trees reach their finest form. That is why I write and record. So one day, you will know the history of each tree, and also a piece of me. I hope when my hands are too old, your hands will take over.

Bonsai teaches patience. It teaches us life keeps changing forward. It teaches love through small acts repeated every day. Just like raising children. My dream is not only to grow bonsai, but to grow men of patience, men of care, men who understand that true beauty takes time.

So, my sons, these trees are also my gift to you. When you water them, remember your father’s dream. Continue the journey, so that one day, when you are old, you too can pass down both trees and lessons to your own children.

With love,
Kevin Chan
